February 2012
Dear Parents,
In the next few days, March 2 – March 19th, your child will be tested in their class. They will take a DRP (Degrees of Reading Powers), the CMT (Connecticut Mastery Test) in math, Editing/Revising, Writing Prompt, and science. We have been practicing and preparing for these tests all year. These tests are given to all fifth graders.
You can help to put your child in a position to succeed on these tests. Here are a few suggestions that you should consider.
- Make sure they read at home for the full 40 minutes without stopping. We need to build up their stamina. The DRP test is for 60 minutes.
- They need plenty of rest the night before each test. An early bedtime would be wise.
- On the morning of a test, each child should have a good breakfast. An empty stomach will affect the brain.
- Be punctual. All car riders and walkers should be in the classroom by 8:10 a.m. This is the actual start time of our day and the tests will be given in the morning. If your child comes in late they are rushed and may not get in the right frame of mind to take the tests.
- We have discussed test-taking strategies with the children. Talk to your child and tell them what worked for you when you had to take a test.
The scheduled dates for the tests are the following;
